How to Make a Resin Bowl: Step by Step
Making a bowl from epoxy resin is one of the most popular techniques among DIY enthusiasts. And no wonder – the result is not only practical but also completely unique. If you’re excited to pour your own fruit or decorative bowl, you’re in the right place! This article will guide you step-by-step through the whole process – from pouring the mold to shaping the final piece. And if you prefer visual instructions, you’ll also find a video tutorial at the end.
What are we going to make?
We’ll be creating a unique epoxy resin bowl using a silicone tray mold. First, we pour the tray with epoxy resin, then shape it into a bowl once it has partially cured.
Step-by-step instructions
- Mixing the epoxy resin
Start by preparing the epoxy resin. We used medium-viscosity Fluid epoxy, which is great for colorful effects and comes with Czech certification for food contact – so the finished bowl can safely be used for fruit. It also offers good UV resistance, longer working time, and is less sensitive to humidity. - Coloring the epoxy resin
Divide the mixed epoxy resin into several cups, depending on how many colors you want to use. Keep one part clear. We combined liquid dyes for solid colors with pigment powders for metallic effects. - Pouring into the mold
Pour the resin gradually into the silicone mold. You don’t need to fill it all the way to the edge. For a more eye-catching look, you can add decorative stones or glitter in the center. - Removing air bubbles
After pouring, let the resin sit for 10–15 minutes, then use a torch to remove any surface bubbles. - Wait for the right moment
The epoxy resin needs to partially cure – it should feel dry to the touch but still be flexible enough to shape. With Fluid epoxy at room temperature (approx. 20°C), this took exactly 12 hours. Note: Curing time can vary depending on the environment and the amount of resin used. - Shaping into a bowl
Once the resin is ready, gently place it into a suitable bowl or form where it will hold its final shape while fully curing. Use gloves to avoid fingerprints and protect your skin. - Final curing
Let the epoxy resin fully cure – this will take about 12 more hours. - Decorating the edges
For an elegant finish, we highlighted the edges with a silver metallic marker. The marker dries quickly and doesn’t rub off. For hard-to-reach areas, a fine brush may help.
